Counsellor
The Counsellor plays an integral role in supporting the activities of the counselling services that supports residents’ mental health facing various emotional and psychological challenges throughout their rehabilitative journey.
The Counsellor shall proactively promote personal development in the progression work to help residents cope and sustain with their rehabilitation to excel. The counsellor will work closely with the treating psychiatrist and rehabilitation team for the overall accomplishment of the residents’ program. The Counsellor will update to the family of assigned residents and team after sessions to integrate the necessary into their individual treatment plans.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Contribute and support the development of the counselling, special needs and mental health services in line with the organization’s policies and procedures.
- Deliver counselling through individual and group sessions to enhance mental health.
- Provide on-site professional diagnosis, psychological interventions (assessment, support and therapy) for residents who have special needs and mental health issues.
- Refer resident to psychologists, other healthcare providers, agencies, and community resources in order to create a thorough action plan.
- Coordinate and work with residents’ family treating psychiatrist and team to enable resident to cope better using various effective strategies including training.
- Develop therapeutic relationship with residents to enable them to perform better; and define goals, plan action and gain insight.
- Take a holistic (mind and body) approach towards mental health care.
- Recommend and source for related resources required e.g. treatment facilities, shelters, online resources for psychoeducation, self-help books.
- Provide a safe and professional service in accordance with Lembaga Kaunselor’s code of ethics.
- Coordinate primary investigations and assessments during mental health crisis, medical emergencies etc.
- Promote mental health awareness strategically including organization of workshops and seminars that will assist residents in the academic and career progression, personal and social development.
- Maintain counselling records and other reports as required by management from time to time.
- Provide reports and feedback to management on general issues, complaints and needs of residents which may need to be addressed.
- Facilitate workshops and talks i.e. career, coping mechanisms related to stress, relationship issues.
- Support and participate in the planning and implementation of related activities and events organized by the College including representation in resident consultative meetings, partnership meetings with other stakeholders as and when required.
- Maintain required National Certified Counsellor certification for the counselling position.
- Any other responsibilities that may be assigned from time to time.
- Emergency sessions and mental health aide; Counsellor may have to come in to manage residents in times of crisis in the event the team cannot handle. Team may call/text counsellor for advice time to time to try to manage without counsellor being present during emergencies.

Qualifications
- Master’s degree or PHD in counselling/guidance or counselling psychology.
- Accredited membership of a recognized professional body, a current practicing certificate from Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia.
- At least two (2) years’ experience as a Counsellor.
- Competent in counselling approaches, process, and techniques.
- Sound knowledge in resident counselling including the ability to relate and work well with residents on a variety of complex issues.
- Good grasp of counselling skills including listening, persuasive and change adoption confidentiality, sensitiveness, and discretion.
- Possess good behavioural personality (i.e. patient, warm, empathetic, emotionally resilient,); self-motivated and flexible team member.
- Excellent communication skills.
Working Conditions
- Visiting consultant.
- Required to come in to see patient’s/residents assigned on fixed days and timings of choosing.
